Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most remote and breathtaking national parks in Uganda. It is located in the northeastern part of the country, on the border with South Sudan and Kenya. Apoka Rest Camp

Kanangorok Hot Springs
Located in the northeastern part of the park, these hot springs are a unique feature and offer a different experience compared to the typical Savannah landscapes, some of which are not found in other parts of Uganda, making it a paradise for bird lovers

Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp.For a more rustic experience, this camp offers basic but comfortable tents with shared facilities. This is a good option for those looking for an experience closer to nature
Kitgum Lodge.Located in Kitgum, which is a little further from the park, this lodge is a good base for visiting the Kidepo Valley. It offers simple but comfortable rooms and basic amenities.
UWA Rest Camp. Managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, this rest camp offers budget accommodation with basic amenities. This is not a great option for those looking to stay in the park.
Each of these options has its own unique charm and suits different preferences and budgets. Be sure to book in advance, as accommodations can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons.
Best Time to Visit Kidepo Valley National Park
Dry season (December-February and June-September) this is generally considered the best time to visit. The climate is drier, making wildlife easier to see, as animals tend to congregate around water sources. The roads are also more accessible at this time.
Wet season (March-May and October-November) this time can be rewarding because landscape becomes lush and green and there are fewer tourists, offering a more relaxed experience.
Each season has its own unique charm, so your choice may depend on whether you prefer more wildlife sightings and more scenic drives.
How to Access Kidepo National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most remote and breathtaking national parks in the country. Here’s how to get there
By plane
Charter flights. The fastest and most convenient way to get to Kidepo is by a charter flight. Several companies offer flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airport directly to Apoka Airstrip in Kidepo. The flight takes about 2 hours.
Regular flights. Some operators offer regular flights, although they are not necessarily every day. It is better to book in advance and confirm the time.
By road From Kampala
Via Gulu. This is the most popular route, about 571 km (355 miles). The trip lasts from 10 to 12 hours. The route is Kampala → Gulu → Kitgum → Kidepo Valley National Park.
Via Mbale. Another route passes through Mbale, Soroti and Moroto. This route is about 740 km (460 miles) and can take from 12 to 13 hours. The roads can be difficult, especially during the rainy season.
Via Karamoja. This is a more scenic but difficult route. The roads are rough and a 4×4 vehicle is essential.
From Gulu.
From Gulu to Kidepo Valley National Park is about 300 km (186 miles) and takes about 5–6 hours. The route is mostly on a well-maintained road until you reach the most remote areas closer to the park.
Travel tips
If you travel by road, especially in remote areas, a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended due to broken terrain.
Be sure to bring enough fuel and supplies as services are limited in remote areas leading into the park.
Consider booking with a tour operator that can arrange transport, accommodation and parking guide.
