Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area that straddles the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Volcanic origin. The landscape of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was formed by volcanic activity. The park includes three important volcanoes namely, Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Muhabura. These volcanoes are part of the Virunga Mountains, which were formed by the tectonic activity of the East African rift System.

Tectonic Activity. The East African Rift System is a tectonic plate boundary where the African Plate is splitting into the Somali Plate and the Nubian Plate. This rifting has led to the formation of volcanic mountains, including those in Mgahinga.

Volcanic eruptions. Volcanic activity in the region is geologically relatively recent with the most recent eruptions occurring in the last thousand years. Volcanic deposits have contributed to the rugged terrain and variety of habitats found in the park.

Glacial impact. During the last ice age, the Virunga Mountains experienced glaciation, which left glacial valleys and cirques. Although the glaciers have largely retreated, their presence has affected the topography and ecosystem of the park.

Best Time to Visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda is usually during the dry season, which runs from June to September and December to February. During these periods, the weather is more favorable for walking with less rainfall and easier access to the paths.

How to Access Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

To enter Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, follow these steps:

Travel to Uganda.Take a flight to Entebbe International Airport, which is Uganda’s main international gateway.

Travel to Kisoro.From Entebbe, Take a domestic flight to Kisoro Airstrip or travel by road. The journey takes about 8 to 10 hours from Entebbe to Kisoro.

Getting to the park.Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located near Kisoro. You can hire a 4×4 vehicle for the journey from Kisoro to the park, which takes about 30 minutes to drive.
