Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park is a unique and biodiverse protected area located in the western part of Uganda, in the Albertine Rift Valley. Geological History of Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park is located in the Albertine Rift, a branch of the Great Rift Valley, which is one of the most active tectonic zones in the world .The geological history of this region is closely linked to the volcanic activity that shaped the landscape of East Africa and is also closely linked to the formation of the Albertine Rift. This rift is part of the larger East African rift system, which began to form about 25 to 35 million years ago during the Miocene epoch.
It is the result of divergent tectonic forces that caused the African plate to spread, leading to the creation of deep valleys and high mountains.
The area around Semuliki had significant volcanic activity, especially during the time of the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. Volcanic processes have contributed to the formation of the rugged terrain of the region and the volcanic mountains, such as the Rwenzori Mountains, which are located to the north of the park. These Mountains are not volcanic, but they were born due to tectonic activity on faults.

Best Time to Visit Semuliki National Park
The best time to visit Semuliki National Park is during the dry season, which lasts from December to February. This period is one of the main dry seasons, with less chance of precipitation, which makes it easy to explore the paths of the park and participate in activities such as bird watching, game playing and visits to the hot springs of Sempaya.
June to September another dry season. This time is also ideal to visit the park. The vegetation is less dense, which improves wildlife viewing opportunities, and the roads in the park are more accessible.
How to Access Semuliki National Park
Entrance to Semuliki National Park in Uganda includes several options, depending on your starting point and preferred mode of transportation:
By Road
From Kampala to Fort Portal (about 300 km), it is about 4 to 5 hours), then Fort Portali to Semuliki National Park (about 60 km, about 15 to 2 hours). This route is more common and scenic, passing through beautiful landscapes, including tea plantations and the Rwenzori Mountains.
Kampala to Mubende (180 km), then Mubende to Fort Portal and finally Fort Portal to Semuliki National Park. This route is a bit longer but still viable, especially if you want to explore different parts of Uganda.
From Fort Portal the drive from Fort Portal to Semuliki National Park takes about 15 to 2 hours (60 km). The road is generally good, although some stretches can be difficult, especially during the rainy season.
By plane From Entebbe or Kajjansi
You can take a charter flight from Entebbe International Airport or the runway from Kajjansi Airstrip to Semulik, a nearby airstrip like Kasese or Toro. From here you can drive to the park. The flight usually takes about 15 hours.
By public transport
Buses and taxis run daily from Kampala to Fort Portal. From Fort Portal, you can hire a private taxi or take a public matatu (shared taxi) to Semuliki National Park.
