Safari Highlights
Day 1: Nairobi – Masai Mara National Reserve
Your wildlife adventure begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, the vibrant capital city of Kenya. As you leave the bustling city behind, the landscape gradually transforms into the vast and open savannahs that are characteristic of the Great Rift Valley. The drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve takes approximately five to six hours, allowing you to witness the diverse topography of Kenya, from rolling hills to the dramatic escarpments of the Rift Valley.
Upon arrival in the Masai Mara, you will check into your lodge or tented camp, where you can unwind and enjoy a hearty lunch before embarking on your first game drive. The Masai Mara is one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife reserves, famed for its incredible biodiversity and large populations of big cats. This initial afternoon game drive offers a taste of what’s to come, as you traverse the open plains in search of the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.
As the sun sets over the horizon, casting a warm golden light across the landscape, the Masai Mara comes alive with activity. Predators begin their evening hunts, while herds of grazers like zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles graze peacefully in the fading light. The day concludes with a return to your accommodation, where you can enjoy dinner under the African stars, reflecting on the day’s adventures.
Day 2: Masai Mara National Reserve Exploration
The second day of your safari is dedicated to a full exploration of the Masai Mara National Reserve, a day that promises abundant wildlife sightings and unforgettable moments in the wild. The Masai Mara, covering an area of approximately 1,510 square kilometers, is a protected area that is home to over 95 species of mammals and over 570 species of birds, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.
Morning Game Drive: The day begins with an early morning game drive, a time when the wildlife is most active. The cool, crisp air of the morning provides the perfect conditions for predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards to hunt. Your experienced guide will lead you through the Mara’s diverse habitats, from open savannahs to dense thickets and riverine forests, ensuring that you have the best chance to witness the drama of the wild. Keep your camera ready for close encounters with prides of lions, stealthy leopards hidden in the trees, and cheetahs sprinting across the plains in pursuit of prey.
Optional Hot Air Balloon Safari: For those seeking a unique perspective of the Masai Mara, an optional hot air balloon safari is available at an additional cost. Floating silently above the plains at sunrise, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the wildlife below, from herds of elephants moving gracefully through the grasslands to the meandering Mara River, where hippos and crocodiles bask in the morning sun. This breathtaking experience concludes with a champagne breakfast in the bush, a truly magical way to start the day.
Afternoon Game Drive: After a leisurely lunch and some relaxation back at your lodge or camp, you’ll set out for an afternoon game drive. The afternoon is a great time to spot elephants, giraffes, and other herbivores as they move toward watering holes to quench their thirst. Birdwatchers will also be delighted by the variety of species, from the majestic African fish eagle to the colorful lilac-breasted roller, Kenya’s national bird. As the day draws to a close, the Masai Mara’s golden hour provides stunning photographic opportunities, with the soft light illuminating the landscape and its inhabitants.
Cultural Visit to a Maasai Village (Optional): In addition to game drives, you have the option to visit a traditional Maasai village, where you can learn about the culture and customs of the Maasai people. The Maasai are known for their distinctive dress, beadwork, and deep connection to the land and wildlife. A visit to a Maasai village offers a unique cultural experience, allowing you to interact with the villagers, participate in traditional dances, and gain insight into their way of life. This experience adds a rich cultural dimension to your safari, deepening your understanding of the Maasai’s role in conserving the region’s wildlife.
Day 3: Masai Mara – Lake Naivasha
After breakfast, you’ll bid farewell to the Masai Mara and embark on a scenic drive to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake located in the Great Rift Valley. The drive takes you through Kenya’s stunning countryside, with views of rolling hills, fertile farmland, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife along the way. Lake Naivasha, situated at an altitude of 1,884 meters above sea level, is one of the highest lakes in the Rift Valley and is renowned for its serene beauty and abundant birdlife.
Upon arrival at Lake Naivasha, you will check into your lodge or resort, where you can relax and enjoy lunch with views of the shimmering lake. In the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the lake and its surroundings through a variety of activities.
Boat Ride on Lake Naivasha: One of the highlights of your visit to Lake Naivasha is a boat ride on the tranquil waters of the lake. As you glide across the lake, you’ll have the chance to spot hippos wallowing in the shallows, as well as a plethora of bird species, including pelicans, cormorants, and kingfishers. The lake’s shores are also home to a variety of wildlife, such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes, which can often be seen grazing in the nearby grasslands. The boat ride provides a peaceful and intimate way to experience the natural beauty of Lake Naivasha.
Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary: After the boat ride, you may choose to visit the nearby Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary, a private game reserve located on a peninsula in Lake Naivasha. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, including giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and waterbucks, and is one of the few places in Kenya where you can walk among the wildlife. The absence of large predators on the island makes it a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. As you walk through the sanctuary, guided by a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the animals up close in their natural habitat, making for an unforgettable experience.
Day 4: Lake Naivasha – Nairobi
On the final day of your safari, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your lodge or resort, taking in the peaceful surroundings of Lake Naivasha one last time. Depending on your schedule, you may choose to take a morning walk along the lake’s shores, where you can spot more of the area’s diverse birdlife and perhaps catch a glimpse of some of the resident wildlife.
After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey back to Nairobi, a drive that offers one last chance to soak in the scenic beauty of the Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival in Nairobi, you can choose to explore some of the city’s attractions, such as the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the Giraffe Centre, or the Karen Blixen Museum, before your departure. Alternatively, you may opt to continue your Kenyan adventure with an extension to other famous national parks, such as Amboseli National Park or Tsavo National Park, or head to the Kenyan coast for some relaxation on the beautiful beaches of Mombasa or Diani.
